Four Big Weight Loss No-Nos
by wendell klutts - Sunday, 10 February 2008, 04:44 AM
Anyone in the world
By Greg Landry, M.S. I've worked with hundreds of people who were interested in losing weight. Overthe years I've noticed four areas that I believe are particular hindrancesto weight loss. If your goal is to be successful at losing weight and keeping it off, avoid the "big 4" no-nos. #1 Big No-No: Not exercising on a daily basis. Daily exercise sends your metabolism through the roof! I have seen VERY FEW peoplewho are not very regular exercisers, loseweight AND keep it off. Losing weight and maintaining that losscan be very difficult. However, both canbe made considerably easier with regularexercise, preferably in the morning. If you're interested in losing fat, you'reobjective is to create a daily caloricdeficit. For example, If you're consuming1700 calories per day, and expending 2000calories per day, your caloric deficit is300 calories. Losing a pound of fat requiresa deficit of 3500 calories. So, to lose two pounds per week would require a dailydeficit of 1000 calories. So, if you'd like to increase your daily caloric deficit, you have two options; 1. To decrease your caloric intake by eatingfewer calories, or..2. To increase your caloric expenditure via more activity / exercise. However, you cannot decrease your dailycaloric intake much lower than 1200 to 1500 or so without potentially creating health and metabolism problems. In fact, many people's metabolism (basal metabolic rate) is so slow from years of inactivity and dieting, that they are only burning fewer than 1500 calories per day.Without exercise, they would have todecrease their daily caloric intake tounhealthy levels to lose weight. And, acaloric intake that's too low only createsmore metabolism problems and a vicious cycle of more weight gain. So, the only remaining factor in the deficit equation is caloric expenditure through increased activity / exercise. The good news is that you can substantiallyincrease your caloric expenditure. Forexample, if you're currently walking for 30 minutes two days per week, over a period of several weeks you can increase your walkingto 60 minutes per day, six to seven daysper week and begin weight training for 30minutes three days per week. So, in this example, you would increase your monthly exercise minutes from about 240 to 1530. Plus, in addition to the calories thatyou're expending during exercise, you wouldalso substantially increase the number ofcalories you're burning 24 hours-a-day, yes, you'll even burn more calories while you'resleeping because you've fired-up your basalmetabolic rate. You can't beat that, can you? Here's another VERY important reasonto exercise while you're restrictingcalories and trying to lose weight. you tendto lose muscle tissue from any muscle thatyou're not using while you're restrictingcalories. You've heard it - use it or lose it.And, there are three main consequences to losing muscle;1. Your metabolism (basal metabolic rate)decreases causing you to burn *fewer* calories24 hours-a-day and causing the maintenanceof your weight loss to be very difficult.2. Your muscles get flabby and mushy.3. Your are weaker and become fatiguedmore easily. #2 Big No-No: Not deciding to make a drasticchange. I've seen this over and over againwith hundreds of people. Unless someonedecides that they are ready to get reallyserious about losing weight and ready tomake drastic changes, their chances of losingweight and keeping it off are not good. Research continues to indicate thatAmericans are becoming more sedentary..and fatter every year. This move towardinactivity and an increase in body fatis even more pronounced in children, whodon't get out and play anymore. Instead, they sit in front of a TV or computer(perhaps like their parents) for many of their waking hours. We know that there is a very direct, inverse relationship between a person'slevel of activity and the percentage oftheir weight that is fat. less activityequals more fat, and more activity equalslees fat. I received an email message recentlythat I'd like to share with you. It's aweight loss and fitness success storythat makes you want to start exercisingwhile you're reading it. It's from a 48 year-old lady, Elizabeth, who lives in Lexington, Kentucky. Sheis living proof that less activityequals more fat, and more activity equals less fat. Here's her letter: "Greg, I'm writing to thank you for yourinspiring articles and to tell you aboutmy journey (a rough one) to fitness. Iwas at a healthy weight in my earlytwenties and had my first child at age26. I remained about 30 pounds overweightafter she was born." "I managed to gain 15 more pounds duringthe next four years, mostly because of several diets I tried. After the birthof my second child at age 31, I was 60pounds overweight and very frustrated.Over the next 15 years I tried numerousdiets (even eating just rice) that ultimate led to me being 120 poundsoverweight." "I started reading your articles two yearsago and it finally began to sink in. Ifinally realized that exercise wasn'tjust about the calories I was burningduring exercise. I finally realizedthat I would never lose the weight andkeep it off without some real exercisein my life." "I reached a point in my life where myweight was ruining my life. I got to thepoint where everything was a struggle, none of my fat clothes fit, I didn'twant to see anyone because of the way Ilooked, and even walking made mebreathless. I decided that I would eithermake a drastic change at that point orI would give up. I chose to make a drasticchange." "I knew that exercise needed to be apriority and so I changed several thingsin my daily schedule to make that happen.I started with very little but I was veryconsistent. I worked up to 45 minutes ofaerobic exercise in the morning and 30 to45 minutes in the evening. On Saturdays,I take a less intense, but longer walkthroughout my area of town enjoying allthe sights. I'm up to 8 to 10 miles onmy Saturday walk. I also weight trainthree days a week. Please don't get theimpression that this was easy. I wentthrough MANY difficult struggles butit definitely got easier as I progressed." "I'm now 12 pounds from my goal weight. Greg,I can't begin to explain how my life haschanged. Everything is different. Eventhe way people talk to me. It's almostlike people didn't even see the personunder all that fat. Probably best of allis that I have energy to function now.I'm not constantly tired like I used tobe." "Obviously, my perception of exercise haschanged now. I enjoy it and look forwardto it. I'm planning on doing a halfmarathon (13.1 miles) walk in the fall. Thanks again for your words of encouragement." ElizabethLexington, Kentucky Wow! This lady is unstoppable. Notice thatshe first realized the true benefits ofexercise and then decided to do *whatever*she had to for exercise to become aconsistent part of her life. Exercise radically changes how your bodyhandles fat! when you're sedentary, allthe physiological signals tell your bodyto hang on to the fat and dump the metabolism boosting muscle. When you'reexercising on a daily basis, all thephysiological signals tell your body todump the fat and increase the metabolismboosting muscle. Which signals do you want? #3 Big No-No: Not taking the time to planand prepare your eating. Healthy eating forweight loss won't just happen, you have tospend time on it. Not being prepared is a major factor thatleads to overeating and unhealthy eating.Take time to plan your shopping and eatingfor the week. Take time to prepare yourlunch to take to work, and your meal forthe evening, etc. Plan for healthy snacksto have at home, in your car, at work, etc.Our weight loss programs specifically discuss how to set up an effective snackingsystem. 4. Not including intervals in your aerobicexercise. Intervals are brief periods (about one minute) of more intense exercise mixed into yourregular aerobic exercise sessions. Forexample, if you're walking, you would do aone minute interval of faster walking onceevery five minutes throughout your exercisesession. Here's how it will look.. you'll start withyour normal three to five minute warm-up andthen five minutes into your workout you doyour first interval, one minute of fasterwalking (or perhaps jogging). At the end ofthat minute you should be "winded" and readyto slow down. You'll slow down to your normalexercising speed for the next four minutesand then your fifth minute is another oneminute interval. This pattern continues throughout your exercise session. You'll derive several benefits from intervals.. 1. Intervals can help you to get past aweight loss plateau. 2. Intervals increase your aerobic fitnesslevel by "pushing the envelope". While doingyour interval you cross the anaerobicthreshold into anaerobic metabolism, forcingyour body to become conditioned to more intense exercise. 3. Your increased level of fitness means thata given level of exercise will feel easierand that you will be able to exercise at a higher intensity which "burns" more calories. 4. Your increased level of fitness also meansthat you will be less fatigued from dailyactivities and you'll have more "energy" throughout the day. 5. Intervals increase your basal metabolicrate (BMR), causing you to burn more calories24 hours-a-day. 6. Intervals cause you to "burn" more caloriesduring your exercise session and for several hours afterwards. 7. Intervals will tone the involved musclesto a greater degree than your regular aerobic exercise would. 8. Intervals can make your exercise lessmonotonous and help the time pass morequickly. 9. Intervals will energize you! If you'd like to put a little excitement intoyour exercise, and you're looking for better results, give intervals a try. Avoid these four "no-nos" and your weight lossefforts are much more likely to be successful. copyright 2007 by Greg Landry, M.S. Travel Fraud - What to Look For
by wendell klutts - Saturday, 9 February 2008, 01:24 AM
Anyone in the world
By Michael Russell Many con artists snare their marks by promising huge discounts that sound plausible, particularly since many travel suppliers today offer booking bargains and last-minute deals to recover sales lost after the September 11 tragedies. The following red flags show that you've been targeted by a travel scam artist. - The seller will not give you anything in writing describing the trip until you have paid up front. Always insist on material in the mail before you pay a dime, in deposits, fees, or charges of any kind. Absolutely refuse to pay any money at all to a travel seller before you have this material in hand. Ask them to send complete details on the trip, including total price, service charges, processing fees, surcharges and any other hidden or undisclosed fees or charges, the components of the trip (particularly the specific hotels, airline flights, cruise ships and other services involved) and penalties for canceling or changing the trip plans and "blackout dates" - The seller pressures you to make an immediate decision. Always refuse any high-pressure sales pitches that prevent you from shopping around with other travel retailers. - The seller asks for your credit card number or bank account number over the phone. Never give out this kind of information over the phone unless you called the travel retailer yourself, you know the retailer and you are completely confident in the company. All it takes is your credit card number and expiration date for the most inexperienced scam artist to make fraudulent charges on your credit card and with your bank account number, a scam artist can even transfer funds directly from your account. - The seller tells you that you just won a prize or a trip in a contest that is news to you. If you can't remember registering for a sweepstake, you probably didn't. The promised trip is most likely a fraud or at the very least a gimmick with a ton of hidden costs and/or restrictions. - The seller says that you can claim your prize by paying a small administrative fee. A reputable contest or sweepstake will never require you to pay a fee to collect a prize. In fact, many states prohibit this by law. Refuse to pay any amount of money to collect any prize or trip. If you have to pay for it, it's not much of a prize, is it? - The seller asks you to make a bank transfer, send a certified check or money order, or prepare a check to be picked up by a courier. By using cash equivalents or receiving funds using delivery methods other than the U.S. Postal Service, scam artists are trying to take advantage of perceived loopholes in federal regulations prohibiting fraud via phone and mail. - You cannot book the deal through any other travel retailer. If you are told that you have to purchase the package directly from the seller - that the deal is so good you can't buy it anywhere else - odds are something isn't on the level. Though this is not an exhaustive list, these are some of the major Red Flags to look for when offered what seems to be a great deal. Keep your eyes open, because believe me, they are looking for you. A Fly Fisher's Respect for Nature
by wendell klutts - Thursday, 7 February 2008, 09:04 AM
Anyone in the world
By Steve Robbins Are fly fishers truly good stewards of our God given natural resources? Id like to think so but Im not so sure that all of us are. I would venture to assume that in fly fishing, the gentlemans sport, we have the ethical fibers within us that drive us to take good care of our rivers, lakes and streams. Is this an accurate assumption? Over the last 10 years, fly fishing has certainly been one of the fastest growing outdoor activities in North America. With this growth were sure to attract those who are less ecologically conscious that wed like. We can strive to create public awareness in the fly fishing community yet probably the best place to start is with ourselves. Marjory Douglass wrote, "The future lies within the strength with which man can set his powers of creation against his impulses for destruction." Now dont get me wrong. I would definitely never pass as a purist tree hugger. I do not intend to preach but I think there area few things that we can look at. It truly hurts me to be on a beautiful stream to come upon the discarded remains of human presence that include water bottles, beer cans and cigarette butts. I know youve all hear one of the backpackers code of ethics, "if you pack it in then pack it out". One pressing issue to consider for us nymphers is lead shot. Is it an eco sin to use lead split shot instead of tin? Of course it is! Lead is toxic and kills living creatures and you cannot seriously consider yourself a conservationist if you are intentionally putting lead into nature. Now, the lead that is accidentally dropped into nature by fly fishermen is surely a fraction of one percent of the total amount of lead that flies out of shotguns nationwide and lands in the wild, so why bother us with the issue? Because every little bit hurts. How many times have you seen a wadded and tangled leader in the stream? Have you seen the horrible images of wildlife becoming tangled in the mass of monofilament? Zane Grey wrote, "If I fished only to capture fish, my fishing trips would have ended long ago." And so it is with most considerate anglers. The thrill of the catch is often overshadowed by nature's breathtaking grandeur. I love to catch fish as much as anyone. However, when Im all alone and think back to my fly fishing adventures, I think less of the individual fish that I caught than of the places that Ive been and settings in which Ive fished. Fly fisherman become a part of the waters they fish. As naturalist John Muir observed, "When one tugs on a single thing in nature, one finds it attached to the rest of the world." We must approach our pristine waters with respect. If we do this, then perhaps we gain its total amount of enjoyment. The fish aren't always biting, but Mother Nature is always watching. Online Resources for Coping With the Discovery of Infidelity

By Tad Stevens Few events are more painful than dealing with the discovery of a cheating spouse. At the end of the day, the emotional bond we share with another individual is the most important thing we have. And unfortunately, infidelity can destroy all of the benefits of being close to someone else. Infidelity destroys trust, love, comfort and security. The shock of catching a cheating spouse can be devastating. Everything which was once safe and familiar is suddenly fraught with uncertainty. Infidelity is such a painful experience because the person who is supposed to provide unconditional, emotional support turns out to be the person who has hurt you the most. Moreover, there is often stigma attached to being the victim of infidelity. People who have been cheated on typically feel shame, even though they have done nothing wrong. When infidelity strikes, it can be difficult to know where to turn for help. And while there is a lot of useful information on the web designed to help people deal with the problem of infidelity, this information can be difficult to find, especially in a time of crisis. There are literally millions of websites dealing with the subject of cheating and infidelity. Unfortunately, some of the websites which are the easiest to find also tend to be the least useful. With this in mind, I have tried to compile a handful of sites all designed to help people cope with the discovery of infidelity. Catering To Fit Your Needs
by wendell klutts - Wednesday, 30 January 2008, 02:24 AM
Anyone in the world
By Caprice Pettit One of the most important things you'll need to remember when you plan your special day is the caterer. This is because the food you serve will be one of the most memorable parts of the reception for your guests. Caterers can be booked up to a year in advance, so it is wise to search one out early. A simple time line for finding a caterer is to start looking for one at 10 months before the wedding, make sure you have booked the caterer by 8 months, and decide on a menu by 6 months. A good caterer does more than one might think. They are well trained in food selection and preparation, reception staging, serving and clean up. Some go as far as to decorate for you, hire bartenders, and provide the wedding cake. Others may only prepare and serve the food and then clean up. When looking for a caterer, keep in mind these things: Find a caterer with a good reputation whose food you can sample before signing a contract. Make appointments and interview many different caterers to find the right one for you. Some caterers may even give you phone numbers of past customers who were pleased with the caterer's work. Many reception sites have their own catering services, so when you're looking for a hall, decide if it has what you want in both catering and atmosphere. Check to see what services the caterers will provide other than just the meal (electricity, lighting, tents, tables, linens, chairs, etc). If you feel like you have found the right caterer, wait to sign a contract until the caterer understands your expectations and you understand the terms of agreement. Keep in mind questions such as: will the cost be a flat rate or a per-person fee? Are gratuities automatically added? Are you going to have a sit-down dinner or a buffet? Will drinks be included in the price? Catering is one of the most expensive parts of the wedding, so when it comes to cost, it is up to you whether you want to spend any amount or keep costs down. There are different ways serve food at your wedding that will vary the price. Some tips to keep in mind are: Most caterers will charge per-person, which means the cost will depend on the number of guests that you expect to come. American food will cost much less to serve than an exotic or international dish such as French, Mediterranean, Thai or Indian. Cost will increase if you decide to have the caterer take care of the wine and the wedding cake instead of doing that yourself. Buffet-style catering will cost less than if waiters serve your guests, yet it is also less elegant. Most caterers include set up and clean up in per-person cost; if they do not, that will increase the cost. Most caterers have special rates for children, so be sure to ask about that. Overtime costs, gratuities or taxes will all affect the final cost of your caterer. Many people forget about the cost of drinks when planning for a caterer. This can really rack up the price depending on what you want to serve for beverages: The least expensive option is to not serve any alcohol, and instead have a cash bar where guests can buy their own drinks. If you decide to do this, inform your guests so they know to bring their own money. A nicer option, but more expensive, is to serve only beer and wine. You can buy the beer and wine yourself or have the caterer provide them (this will be a little more expensive than buying it yourself). The most expensive option will be to have an open bar with free drinks. Your guests will love this and you won't have to worry about providing drinks yourself. Remember to include champagne for the wedding toast. Because the food and drink at your wedding will be one of the most memorable parts for the guests and for you, be sure you are happy with your choice of a caterer. Remember these tips when selecting a caterer, and make sure they have what you want. Portion Control Secrets- Do You Really Know How Much You Are Eating

By Renee Feldman It's no secret that over 65 percent of Americans are overweight and they are quickly being joined by their neighbors from all over the world. The secret lies in how much we are all really eating. It's also glaringly obvious that in our electronic motorized world, we barely move, let alone exercise. Also, we are bombarded with so much information from televisions, computers, cell phones, handheld devices and E-Mail that are minds are cluttered. This makes it difficult for us to get centered on how much weight we are gaining and how to get rid of it. By looking at a tiny part of the equation: portions, we can become more aware of how much we are really eating and start to lose weight. Many of us are trained to finish what is on our plate even if we are full. This is especially problematic when we dine out. The portions that we get while eating in a restaurant are often 3 times more then what we need nutritionally. Many of us need to be OK with leaving food on our plate and either splitting a dish with our dining companion or taking some home with us. When eating at home, put a reasonable amount of food on your plate or in a bowl and eat just that. If you are still hungry, wait 20 minutes to see if you need to eat more. It can take at least that long for the brain to register if you are full. If you are snacking, look specifically at what a serving is on the label of your snack, measure that out and eat just that. Once you cut down on your portions a bit, you will begin to lose weight. If you want to guarantee that weight loss, then start exercising. Exercise does not need to be a daunting time consuming task. By adding a bit of cardiovascular exercise and a couple of strength and conditioning movements to your day, you can begin to raise your metabolism and burn more calories. Circuit training is a good way to do this because it rotates cardiovascular movements with strength and conditioning movements. In order to insure that you start exercising and start eating less, you need to get these ideas firm in your mind. Here lies the secret for losing weight and keeping it off. You need to get focused on improving the quantity and quality of your life by getting to and maintaining a healthy weight. Get focused by taking 5 minutes a day to empty your mind. For just 5 minutes, shut your cell phone, computer, radio and TV and close your eyes. Focus just on your breath and on letting your mind quiet down. Then affirm your healthy habits, even if you don't have them yet. You have all the tools to lose weight. There are a myriad of ways that you can implement small changes in your lifestyle that will lead to big changes in your body and your health.
