Along with the popular media, publications, the NFL Combine, and our obsession with big muscles, the health and fitness industry has created a high incidence of neck and shoulder injuries in both athletes and non-athletes alike. Whats worse, many people are just not designed anatomically to perform this particular exercise the way it is generally taught in text books, universities, and even in personal training courses. Lets begin with two major problems with the traditional bench press. First problem, allowing the bar to drop all the way to your chest will ultimately lead to a stretched out shoulder joint capsule. This joint capsules sole purpose in life is to allow just the right amount of movement to prevent damage to the shoulder joint. The joint capsule does so by communicating with the brain with the use of proprioceptors. The proprioceptors communicate the position of the joint, speed of movement, pressure, tension, and pain in the shoulder. If you stretch out the capsule, you alter its ability to communicate this information to your brain. So, in other words, you limit your shoulders ability to let your brain know that its damaging itself, or even what its actually doing. Second problem, most of the time the bench press is performed on a bench. In this position, the normal movement pattern of your shoulder blades is altered, or even completely disrupted. This occurrence will require more movement within the shoulder joint itself. As more and more weight is added to the bar, the disruption of the mechanics of the shoulder girdle is more pronounced and the overload to the shoulder joint is higher, along with the likelihood of injury. So, the questions remain, how far should I let the bar travel, and if not on a bench, what should I be performing the movement on? Simple, you would need to look at two variables. The first being your passive range of motion, or where your arm will naturally fall. Finding and using your passive range of motion will determine the limits that YOUR joint capsule has placed on your shoulder girdle. Second, you will need to find YOUR optimal bottom position. This position is 2-3 cm past your optimal range of motion. This position will identify a small buffer zone of movement for you, which will allow for a challenge to the movement without damaging the structure. Why is all this so important? Once you stretch your joint capsule, it can no longer stabilize the shoulder joint for any movement. Movements can include throwing a ball, swimming, swinging a bat, driving a car, or even eating. If you repeat these movements with an unstable joint, the repetitive, unstable motion will develop an impingement syndrome within the shoulder joint and girdle, resulting in inflammation and pain. Secondary developments include bursitis and tendonitis. Further, lack of stability in the joint will also result in poor accuracy and performance in sports that require precision movements of the arm. Bottom line, to achieve any and all goals you have set for yourself, see a qualified health and fitness professional who has the skill sets to assess your physical traits and then accurately prescribe an exercise program. Practice in front of the mirror, or with a friend or your spouse listening to you, asking questions and playing the part of the interviewer. Make a list of questions you expect the interviewer to ask and have good answers prepared, but have them on the top of your head in general and not memorized. Memorized answers can sound canned and not real, and will not help you. You need to appear genuine and real. Step two is preparing and practicing two or three ideas that you want to get across to the interviewer as to why you are the right person for this job. If you are having trouble thinking of ideas, read your resume again. Look for the key points, qualifications or accomplishments you have written, and be ready to discuss them. Smiles are contagious, even if they cant be seen. Good salesmen know this and practice smiling on the phone. There is something in your voice and attitude that is conveyed when you smile, and the person on the other end of the phone can sense it. There is truth in the old saying, Smile and the world smiles with you. It is basic human nature. Step six is to speak clearly and enunciate. Use a good quality phone, a land line not a cordless. You only want positives during your phone interview. Step seven is the interview itself. Relax, be yourself and do your best. Anyone in the world By Sue Spire If you work in stained glass you must have spent some time repairing, or attempting to repair, a copper foiled panel. Here is an easy way to do it. Cut the top and bottom off of a soft drink or beer can. Then cut the can into strips,
varying the sizes from 1/4" to 1" wide. Cut them the entire length of the can. I have
found kitchen scissors work fine for cutting this thin aluminum. Starting on either end of a solder seam, run off as much solder as possible.
You can do this by fluxing the seam, then holding the panel upright and slightly tipped
forward. Slowly run the soldering iron along the seam allowing the hot solder to drop onto
a newspaper placed under the panel. Do this on both front and back of the panel. Be very
careful so that hot solder does not drop on you. This is not a time to be wearing sandals
or open toed shoes. (Sometime, I'll tell you how I know about hot solder and sandals!) If you are removing an edge piece, lay the panel flat, with the broken glass, you want to
remove, sticking out over the edge of your work bench. While holding the soldering iron on
the seam, slide an aluminum strip between the two pieces. It's easiest to slide it in just
behind the soldering iron.(Hold the strip with a gloved hand...it gets hot). Slowly move
the soldering iron along the seam and at the same time slide the aluminum strip behind
the iron. It will open up the seam for you, and the glass should be easy to remove. When the piece is on an edge piece do the same preliminary steps as for an edge piece.
Then, heat the solder at any given point and, using a narrower piece of aluminum, poke
it into the melted solder and wiggle it between the two pieces of glass. It works best
if you hold the soldering iron on the back side while pushing the aluminum in from the
front. Then you can slowly work it around the piece as described above. Once the piece of glass is out, run the soldering iron around the surrounding edges
to make sure there is no solder left. Cut a new piece of glass, check for a good fit,
foil it, and put it in place. Since the rest of the panel is already soldered, the new piece will lay lower than
the other glass. To get around this problem, place pennies under the new piece of
glass before you solder it. The pennies will raise it up to the right level.
Now you are ready to, solder, clean and patina your newly repaired panel. Once in a while this method won't work, especially if the glass is a really tight fit,

Sure. Try telling that to yourself when you've just moved away from everything you've known for over thirty years. Yikes! Being new in town and trying to become part of an established group is daunting to say the least. Nothing can make you feel like a lowly fifth grader approaching middle school for the first time more than making those long, slow steps up to the front door of a new church. What can we do to make fellow believers and non-believers alike feel not only welcome, but at-home at our church? To begin with, we can pray. Asking God to show us how we can be used by him is not only a first step, but the most important one as well. We would be wise to begin any community outreach with prayer. Following prayer, we must put ourselves in the shoes of those we are trying to reach. What did you think and feel when you first came to church? If you've been attending the same church for so long you can't remember, consider yourself blessed, and then think about how you felt when you started a new job or a new school.
