Help Your Teens Stop Swearing -- 3 Tips for Success
by maurice pye - Friday, 2 May 2008, 01:13 PM
Anyone in the world
By Judy Gruen With four-letter words flying freely in today's society, you almost can't blame teens for picking up the swearing habit. But you know that foul language is degrading to both the speaker and the listener. You also know that your teenager swears regularly, he'll seem less intelligent, less mature, and less respectable than the teen who doesn't swear. No sane person will pretend that teaching teenagers to swear off swearing will be easy, but here are three ways to encourage your teens to clean up their acts: * Redefine Cool -- Teens may believe that swearing raises their "coolness quotient." Your job is to show them that cool kids have confidence and self-control. Swearing reveals the opposite: insensitivity, lack of control, inarticulateness, and even stupidity. And if there's one thing all teens can agree on, it's that stupid is never cool. * Set the right example -- If you also swear, resign your membership in the four-letter word club. Apologize to your teens for setting the wrong example, and let them know you will work hard to use calmer, kinder language, even when you're mad. Sincere humility from a parent makes a strong impression on nearly all teens. * Explain the Link Between Language and Moods -- Foul language is hostile, and using it actually makes you feel angrier. Since feeling angry makes you more prone to swearing again, it's a vicious cycle. So if you want to be happier, talk cleaner. Your teens may not suddenly stop swearing, but taking the time to help them understand how deeply words matter will help. If you follow these tips, you'll take an important step in helping your teens grow into adults who sound more mature, educated and logical, not high-schoolish and emotional. Judy Gruen, a.k.a. Tips For A Host Of Dieting Guests
by maurice pye - Tuesday, 29 April 2008, 02:05 PM
Anyone in the world
By Michelle Selica Martha Stewart once said about dieting, "The toughest part of a diet isn't watching what you eat. It's watching what other people eat." Attending a party is very difficult when you're on a diet. Also, hosting a party when you know many of your guests are a diet can be maddening. What do you serve? Low fat or low-carb? You can't plan your menu to accommodate all the current diets on the menu. But, you can set up an atmosphere that centers on socializing rather than on feasting on appetizers. Every popular diet focuses on different ways to eat healthily. Some diets emphasize no carbohydrates while others permit a few. For example, the Atkins diet doesn't allow processed or refined carbohydrate and the South Beach Diet starts out by prohibiting carbs, but introduces good carbs again in the last stages. Some diets like The Carbohydrate Addicts Diet allow carbs if they are only consumed once a day along with proteins or vegetables. So what options regarding food are left for the party's hostess? Believe it or not, lots! If you leave out all the prepackaged party finger foods that many times amount to 300 calories in one quick pop, you can create healthy and tasty options for all of your guests - dieting or not. The easiest way to select a spread is start by picking a fun get-together theme. When the emphasis is less on what to eat and more on what your guests can participate in, many dieters feel much more comfortable attending a get-together. Some theme ideas include outdoor leisure activities like Bocce ball, TV show finales and special events, and party games like Bunco or Scavenger Hunts. To add an element of pleasure to otherwise uninteresting foods, spice up and add flair to the presentation. For example, why pile carrots, celery and tomatoes on a dish alone when you can arrange them in a rainbow to serve with low-fat yogurt mixed with guacamole seasoning. Try forming a rainbow with fruits too. And rather than just setting out fatty desserts, scoop berries into fun cups and leave by the desserts. Desserts are sometimes the hardest foods to offer at parties. Many dieters feel deprived when they walk past these sugar-laden treats. Try baking some desserts with a sugar replacement like Splenda, which tastes just like the real thing. How about tossing candy and serving flavored shaved ice? Fortunately, we are now told that certain chocolates like dark chocolate in small servings have health benefits. Remember to dish up desserts in smaller serving sizes as we all eat too much sugar anyway. If planning a sit down meal, try not to rush your guests from one dish to the next. Eating in leisure reduces the temptation to over stuff and quickly depositing treats in your mouth. Avoid breaded or fried meats; instead, turn to grilled chicken and chilled shrimp. If you serve soups, start the soup from scratch and leave out starch. If breads work well with your menu, avoid white breads and serve multi-grain or wheat instead. Planning a party when you know many of your guests are dieting can feel a bit overwhelming. However, with some planning, you can find interesting and fun ways to present a beautiful spread while keeping the guests from milling around the food area. How To Read Food Labels So You Know Exactly What You Are Eating
by maurice pye - Sunday, 27 April 2008, 10:11 AM
Anyone in the world
By Gregg Hall More and more food companies are coming up with more and more ways to make food cheaper, more convenient to consume, and tastier. With these come new ingredients, skewed nutrition and a lack of understanding for what you are consuming. When you don't understand what you are consuming, you are risking your health. For instance: not knowing a bag stating "50 calories per serving" means you have to multiply servings to know the total amount of calories, rather than the common misconception that "per serving" means "per bag". As the average food intake increases, so does the perception on what a serving size means. It is surprising that many people find their perception on what a single serving is, turns out to be about two or three servings in reality! The ability to read food labels is one of the most effective ways to make good food selections. It spells out the amounts and types of nutrients in the food per serving. However, for this label to be helpful and expend its effectiveness, you must be able to understand what it is saying: Serving Size States amounts of nutrients per serving. If you follow the serving size, you acquire the amount of nutrients the label states you will get "per serving". For example, if you read "one serving equals 5 chips", and that there are 50 calories per serving, eating 5 chips would give you 50 calories. Eating 10 chips would give you 100 calories, and so on. If the bag says it contains 5 servings, you would take 50 and multiply it by 5 to figure out the total amount of calories you've consumed. Nutrients The nutrients are generally based on the daily dietary allowance stated (these are usually based on 2,500 or 2,000 calorie diets). To understand what you are taking in, know that these are based on how the food corresponds to the dietary allowance for a 2,000 calorie diet. If you've purchased something different from the 2,000 calorie diet, divide the amount by 2,000 and you will find your nutrient's % daily value. Ingredients A list of all of the items used to produce the product. The list generally begins with the most heavily-used ingredient, and descends into the ingredient least used in the product. Label Claim This is the term used for sayings such as "sodium-free!" (Which simply means that it has less than 5 mgs per serving). Understanding food labels is a very good thing to learn and do. It's important to take care of your body, by taking notice of what you intake, and rationing it out so it stays at a healthy level. Once you understand how to read food labels, you hold the power to take care of yourself. Indeed, reading food labels can be very tedious and confusing. Nevertheless, once you get the hang of it, it would be easier for you to watch your diet because you can already control the amount of food that you take. Fast Ways To Lose Weight

By Robert Frost Listed below are 3 of the best and most effective ways to lose weight fast. It is recommended that you use all of them to maximize your weight loss. 1. Start eating small meals- This one has been the mantra for probably many fitness gurus when it comes to fat loss, and it truly works. It is suggested that you divide your daily food intake into 5-6 smaller meals, this ensures that your metabolism stays up which in turn causes you to burn fat throughout the day. An easy way to do this will be to eat no more than a handful every-time you site down for your meal, this will automatically help you in consuming smaller meals at regular intervals. 2. Weight training- There is no way out for this one. If you need to lose weight the fastest, then you must do some form of weight training - no excuses. TIP- It often happens that many a people lose there motivation to exercise over a period of time, this has been mainly due to the lack of change! So it is recommended that you should change your strength training routine every 4-5 weeks to keep your mind & body active and fresh. 3. Last but not the least is interval training- this kind of exercising has been proven to be very effective in burning fat really fast. This basically involves a high intensity exercise followed immediately by an active rest period and then repeated again for a specific period of time. Example: Running on the treadmill- You will perform 2 minutes of jogging followed by 2 minutes of walking, repeat again for a specific period of time, say 15-20 minutes. This kind of training really helps in losing a lot of weight in a shorter period of time. Recommendation: The revolutionary way to lose weight easily. Are You Helping by Asking, "Did You Take Your Meds?"
by maurice pye - Sunday, 20 April 2008, 12:29 PM
Anyone in the world
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Lynne_Taetzsch] Lynne Taetzsch Sometimes its appropriate and helpful to ask a family member or friend, Did you take your meds? My husband, Adrian, for example, is forgetful and wants to be reminded when he needs to take any medication. I probably ask him three or four times a day if hes taken one of his numerous prescription drugs, and hes happy to get the extra help. For those of us who have a mental illness, however, like depression or bipolar disorder, we may not appreciate being asked, Did you take your meds? This issue was discussed at a bipolar support group meeting I attended, and most people felt such a question was not helpful, especially since the meds are anything but a cure-all for our problems. There is no guarantee that if you take your Lithium or Depakote or "X" on a regular basis, you will never have another manic or depressive episode. Add to this general problem, the variety of side effects such as weight gain, ringing in the ears, itchy rashes, liver damage, energy depletion, mind numbing, ad infinitum, you'll see that there is no simple plan that will "fix" us. "Fixing us" is, of course, what our loving family would like to do. In their mind there is a logical correlation between "taking your meds" and leading a peaceful, productive, non-combative life. It is understandable that they fear the phone call telling them we've been arrested or are in the mental ward of a hospital or have had a car accident because in our manic state, we thought we were indestructible. Of course they want us to take our meds! It's their only hope. One parent I know, who has lived through years of trying to "fix" his daughter with policing so that she would "take her meds," has come to a more peaceful place. "It's her life," he says. "She has to want to get better for herself, not for me. I no longer ask her if she's taking her medication or doing the things she needs to in order to stay healthy. I stay out of it." He added that he is there for his daughter if she needs him and asks for the help, but that's it. It's hard as a parent to stand back and watch the destructive behavior of our children. I am a parent, and I was a fanatic when I thought anything was threatening my daughter. Fortunately, she didn't inherit my bipolar genes. I didn't have to watch any wild, destructive behavior in her that my parents had to watch in me. For those of us who have a mental illness like depression or bipolar disorder, we need to give our family members some slack. Most of them do mean well when they ask, "Did you take your meds?" But if you're a family member reading this, realize that such a question only frustrates and antagonizes the person suffering from a mental disorder. If our meds really worked, if they really "fixed us" so that we could lead lives filled with peace, energy, purpose, and a guaranteed good nights sleep, don't you think we'd be taking them? The key to being helpful rather than hurtful is to assist your loved one in ways they have asked you to rather than assuming a parental role. How can I be helpful? is a better question than Did you take your meds? Copyright 2006 Lynne Taetzsch Lynne Taetzsch is an artist and writer who has been bipolar since she was a teenager. Career Suicide: 5 Steps to Failure
by maurice pye - Thursday, 17 April 2008, 01:01 PM
Anyone in the world
By Rich Hopkins Your career can affect every area of happiness in your life, from your recreational options to your family-life, from your financial stability to your personal fulfillment. Yet so many of us fall into common traps that sabotage our careers and endanger our futures. Dont let yourself fall prey to any of the self-destructive choices below: 1. Ignoring your talents2. Living beyond your means3. Torching the trellises4. Not planning ahead5a. Choosing a profession you don't believe in5b. Choosing a profession you hate 1. Ignoring your talents. So what if everyone told you being an engineer would make you more money than drawing comic books? We get one life do you want to spend it miserable and wealthy, or fulfilled and, well, maybe still wealthy? Last I checked, Todd McFarlane, the artist who rejuvenated Spider-Man and created Spawn, is worth several million dollars. Your talents exist for a reason discover where they can take you. 2. Living beyond your means. No matter what you do, if you arent making enough money to cover your lifestyle, you will be unhappy, and ultimately unproductive and hazardous to your career. Either find a job that makes more money, or learn to live on what you currently make. When we learn to live a lifestyle that is in line with what we earn, we understand the true value of our efforts. 3. Torching the trellises. More commonly known as burning bridges, leaving a past employer or co-workers with a bad taste in their mouths will haunt you. If your career path doesnt change, youll probably work with or for some of these people again. Even if you make a career shift or move out of state, anyone of them can turn into future clients, members of your church, or even next-door neighbors. Stay professional through every job transition, and you can preserve a wide base of support for the future. 4. Not planning ahead. Technology advancements, market conditions, layoffs the workplace is more unstable today than at any time in the last 75 years. Stay abreast of changes in your industry. Educate yourself by keeping up with trade magazines, software updates, and company business. Be ready to land on your feet if the firmament under you falls away without warning. 5a. Choosing a cause or employer you dont believe in. If you do not value the work you do, or the company for which you work, get out! You may be doing what you love, but if you are doing it without a strong belief behind it, it will ultimately undermine any short-term success you experience. Great newspaper salespeople may switch to billboards to make a higher income, but not be able to sell it as well if their belief in the product is too low. Take inventory of your values. Great defense attorneys dont always make great prosecutors. 5b. Choosing a profession you hate. Sounds rather self-evident, but it happens continually. How many times a day do we deal with someone at a store, over the phone, or in our own offices who clearly hates their job? Dont let yourself be swayed by prestige, promotion, or money if the job you will take is one youve sworn youd never do, or spent much of your life de-valuing. The day will come when you look in the mirror and wonder who youve become. Career failures lead to financial hardship, family strife, and depression, yet we often make knee-jerk decisions when exiting and entering the workforce. Keep these guidelines in mind next time you shift career paths: Examine your career decisions for at least 24 hours before accepting a position if its the right job, itll still be there tomorrow. Stay true to yourself by finding an accountability partner who can objectively discuss your career path, as opposed to a close friend or family member who may have too large a stake in your affairs. Finally, remember that you are in charge of your career, not the other way around it exists to enable you to live the rest of your life, not to destroy it. Setting Up Your Office For "Health"
by maurice pye - Tuesday, 15 April 2008, 12:01 AM
Anyone in the world
By Loretta Lanphier If you work and are spending one third to one half of your day in an office setting then your surroundings there are as important as those in your home. Although we usually have little control over the buildings we work in, being aware of problems that can affect us will enable us to take counter-measures and may encourage the creation of stimulating and nurturing environments. Below are 10 steps that will help to provide an office that is balanced and conducive to good health and well-being, which will ultimately benefit your health and the health your company. 1) Ergonomically Correct Chair: Make sure that your chair is comfortable and has adjustable height and arms. When you are sitting straight with feet flat on the floor your arms should be at a 90-degree angle when typing on the computer. If you are having to strain or stretch to reach your computer then you are putting stress on the back and shoulder area. Chairs can certainly be expensive but in the long run it will cost much less than spending time at the chiropractor. 2) Green Plants: Plants do more than just enhance the beauty of your surroundings, many actually clean pollutants out of the air as they add oxygen and humidity to the indoor environment. New findings suggest, however, that they may add more than just color and interest. They also filter the air, and can fight against the common high-tech ill, sick building disease. Recent research undertaken by the NASA Space Administration in America has yielded some very interesting results. In a test lasting two years conducted by Dr. B.C. Wolverton at the Stennis Space Centre in Mississippi it was discovered that common houseplants are capable of converting chemical air pollutants into harmless substances. Ivy, one of the smallest of houseplants, does an excellent job of cleaning the air of toxins, especially benzene and TCE. The humble potted Chrysanthemum is another goodie. You can place a number of plants around your office or make up a high scoring clean-air cocktail by adding such plants as Peace Lilies and Parlour Palms. Better still are various forms of Dracaena, Dracaena Warnecki and Dracaena Janet Craig are real pollutant sucking types. Chinese Evergreen and the humble Philoderdron are also two to watch out for. 3) Lighting: Studies suggest that natural light increases human productivity and reduces fatigue and stress. By simply replacing your antiquated fluorescent tubes with full-spectrum tubes, you can instantly enhance your environment and your well-being! Full spectrum lighting emits a natural, balanced spectrum of light that is the closest you can get to sunlight indoors. Based on years of study not only do they bring out true, vibrant colors but they can also ease eye fatigue, improve your mood, reduce cortisol (stress hormone) levels, slow aging of the retina and reduce glare. 4) Aromatherapy: Aromatherapy is the practice of using volatile plant oils, including essential oils, for psychological and physical well-being. Not only does the aroma of the natural essential oil stimulate the brain to trigger a reaction, but the natural constituents (naturally occurring chemicals) of the essential oil are drawn into the lungs and can also supply physical benefit. Aromatherapy can help with a physical condition, can help with symptoms, can affect your mood, or help alleviate or temporarily eliminate stress or other psychological factors. Scenting your office with Lavender essential oil is said to reduce computer errors at least 25%. The following is a good blend to use in the office (must have an aromatherapy diffuser): 2 drops of lemon, orange or bergamot; 2 drops of grapefruit; 1 drop ylang ylang, rose or neroli. Multiply your blend by 4 to obtain a total of 20 drops of your chosen blend. Add your oils to a dark colored glass bottle and mix well by rolling the bottle in between your hands. Add the appropriate number of drops from your created blend to your diffuser by following the manufacturers instructions. There are also many recipes on the Internet to use during the cold and flu season when office-air can be extremely contagious. 5) Air Quality: The EPA informs us that 6 out of 10 buildings are "sick" and that indoor air quality is the United States' number one environmental health problem. A recent study by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture found that ionizing a room led to 52% less dust in the air, and 95% less bacteria in the air (since many of the pollutants found in the air reside on floating dust particles). The U.S.D.A. also performed another study to test the effectiveness of negative ionization at removing airborne Salmonella Enteritidis. The negative ions drastically reduced the airborne salmonella particles, prompting the following statement from the USDA. I recommend a negative ion air purifier for the office setting. These units are small enough to fit on a credenza or desk and are very modestly priced. 6) EMF Protection: Detrimental energies from electromagnetic fields emitted from high tension wires, industrial radar, microwave beams, electric current, computers, cell phones, televisions, fluorescent lights and other electrical appliances have been found to be dangerous to mental and physical health. When an individual sleeps or works for extensive periods within electromagnetic frequency zones, these energies create a constant source of stress (altering body polarity) which can lead to fatigue, frustration, tension and illness. Signs of exposure may include drowsiness, chronic aches and pains, sleep disorders, irritability, low energy and general malaise and may lead to more serious health situations such as cancer. These highly disruptive energy fields actually numb or dull our sense perceptions and adversely impacts brain wave activity. Studies have also shown electromagnetic fields (EMF) to induce mild depression in many subjects with the disruption of melatonin, dopamine, and serotonin levels. There are many devices that can be used in the office or put on the computer that will give EMF protection. I recommend the Safe Space II. It is designed to neutralize harmful electromagnetic fields, geopathic disturbances, as well as other detrimental vibrational energies in environments. It is a framed holographic grid (encased behind glass) 2 x 2 and can be attached to any surfaceespecially the computer monitor. The Safe Space II device clears a spherical area with a 9 radius. You can read more about it at www.ghchealth.com. 7) Colors: Color therapy has its roots in ancient Egypt. Scientific studies recognize that colors bring about emotional reactions to individuals. Our reactions and attitudes to colors differ from person to person. That color affects us all is an undoubted fact. Its significance has been investigated and the results utilized in merchandizing, selling, home decorating, the workplace environment, industry, plant growth, nutrition, physics, physiology, psychology, ecclesiasticism and art. In fact, color is so much a part of our lives that we tend to take it for granted. Colors that are useful in the office are: orange stimulates creativity; yellow intensifies the intellect and heightens motivation; red energizes; blue calming, fights physical and mental tension; green fights irritability and has a healing effect on the body. For the office, use colors that you are drawn to as these are the colors that will benefit your health. 8) Music: Just about all offices have some type of music playing in the background. Music can affect emotional well-being, physical health, social functioning, communication abilities, and cognitive skills. Music in the workplace, either from piped-in music or from a radio, is sometimes used to mask sounds. Music can provide mental stimulation while performing monotonous tasks, which can help to reduce stress levels in the office. Some people, however, find music in the office intensely annoying, especially if it is too loud or inappropriate. I have found that soft, up-lifting music is very essential to the office atmosphere. There is literally a mirage of good background music available on CDs. Search out the Internet on what is right for your office. 9) Breaks: Even the most focused person needs a break at least twice a day. Change of scenery also helps with emotions. One of the best ways to eliminate stress and recharge the body is to go outside for a ten-minute walk. Focus on your surroundings and take deep breaths. This will give you a renewal of energy and will also aid in Vitamin D production. Walk by yourself and focus on clearing your mind. Walking will also get the blood and the lymphatic system flowing. 10) Organization: It is an excellent idea to look into Feng Shui for the office. Feng Shui is basically an environmental science and gives advice on how to create environments in which we feel comfortable and supported. For example, water energy plays a significant role in Feng Shui. Having a small fountain in your office can give a sense of calmness and peacefulness. Keep your office clean and organized. There is no excuse for clutter. Make sure that your desk is clean and that everything is put away before you leave each day. A well-organized, uncluttered desk leads to clear thinking and reduces stress. Make a habit of putting items back in their original place after you are finished using them. Putting in the extra time, effort and money in getting your office environment healthy will pay-off with a multitude of health benefits. Of course, it is assumed that when you are out of the office, you are also taking care of yourself by eating a healthy diet, exercising the body and mind, taking good supplementation and getting adequate rest. All of this goes hand-in-hand in getting and keeping the body healthy. Remember to address your attitude as you travel the path to good health, as negative attitudes are self-destructive. Good health requires desire, determination and discipline in every aspect of your life.
