How To Treat Heel Pain
by brunhilde lang - Tuesday, 13 May 2008, 07:03 AM
Anyone in the world

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Christine_Dobrowolski,_DPM] Christine Dobrowolski, DPM If you experience a sharp pain in your heel when you first step down in the morning, it is most likely due to plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is the tearing and subsequent inflammation of the long ligament on the bottom of your foot due to overuse. This type of heel pain may also occur as achiness at the end of the day in the heel or even burning pain in the arch. Plantar fasciitis can be associated with a heel spur, but this is not the cause of the pain. When the long ligament like structure (plantar fascia) on the bottom of the foot pulls on the heel bone over a period of time, a spur is formed. Only 50% of individuals with plantar fasciitis have a bone spur in their heel. The spur will never go away, but the plantar fasciitis will. Plantar fasciitis is typically caused by a new activity, a new pair of shoes, a worn out pair of shoes or change in job. Individuals with flatfeet or abnormal motion in the feet may have a higher chance of developing plantar fasciitis. Once you develop plantar fasciitis, you will find it very difficult to treat. 1. Identify the cause: Once the cause is identified, try to stop or modify the activity. 2. Decrease aggravating activities: If you walk or run for exercise, stop. Try other activities such as swimming or biking. Avoid the stair stepper, the treadmill and the elliptical machine at the gym. Climbing up and down stairs, walking or running on hills, squatting, carrying heavy items and walking on uneven terrain all place excess stress through the feet. Decrease these activities by asking your spouse, significant other or friend for help with the kids or carrying heavy items. Avoid multiple trips up and down the stairs at work and home. Limit gardening to flatter more even terrain. 3. Trying using an ice massage: To decrease inflammation and pain in your arch, roll your foot over a frozen sports water bottle for at least 20 minutes twice a day. 4. Alternate between hot and cold: This technique is commonly used in physical therapy and is typically referred to as contrast soaks, but there doesnt really need to be any soaking. Start by icing the heel and/or arch for five minutes, then switch to a heating pad for five minutes. Alternate for about thirty minutes two to three times a day. If you can soak in ice water and then hot water, this will accomplish the same thing. 5. Stretch your calf: Before you get out of bed, wrap the towel or belt around the ball of your foot. Pull the foot towards you and keeping your leg straight. You should feel a stretch in the back of the calf. This will also stretch the bottom of the foot. Stretch your calf throughout the day with the runner's stretch and spend 5-10 minutes every evening stretching your calf. 6. Take anti-inflammatory medications: Anti-inflammatory medications will help decrease the inflammation that occurs in the fascia as a result of the stress and tearing. Make sure you dont mask the pain. If you continue to aggravate the fascia, but decrease the pain, you may think you are better, when you are really not. Decrease your activity level and stretch and ice as much as possible during the time you are taking these medications. Take the medication with food and stop taking the medication if you experience stomach discomfort. If you have any concerns, contact your doctor. 7. Wear supportive shoes: A supportive shoe will only bend at the toes. This step may seem logical, but many individuals don't realize that their comfortable shoes lack support and may be contributing to their pain. Test your shoe by taking it, flipping it over and grabbing the toe area and the heel. Attempt to fold the shoe in half. If the shoe bends in half, then the shoe is not supportive. Don't go barefoot. See the American Podiatric Medical Association's (APMA) list of approved shoes at www.apma.org/ seal/sealaccategory.html. 8. Try a night splint: A night splint stretches out the plantar fascia when you are sleeping. Instead of 5-10 minutes of stretching throughout the day, you will be receiving six to eight hours of stretching. There are a number of night splints which can help. Soft night splints, like The Strassburg Sock, tend to be more comfortable for patients and can be bought online. The larger and more rigid night splints tend to work very well, when patients can tolerate them. They tend to be more expensive, but if you are dispensed a night splint at your doctors office, they may be covered by your insurance. 9. Wear orthotics: Prefabricated orthotics are inserts that fit into the shoe to help control motion in your feet. Controlling abnormal motion in the feet can decrease the stress and help the plantar fascia heal. Soft inserts available at the drug store may be comfortable, but they will not help control abnormal motion. Make sure the orthotics you buy are rigid or stiff from the heel to the ball of the foot. 10. See a podiatrist: If your symptoms persist, make an appointment with your podiatrist. Other treatments include prescription anti-inflammatory medication, steroid injections, physical therapy, cast boots, shock wave therapy and surgery. Luckily, very few individuals need surgery. Christine Dobrowolski is a podiatrist and the author of Those Aching Feet: Your Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment of Common Foot Problems. A Man's Guide to Choosing an Engagement Ring
by brunhilde lang - Monday, 5 May 2008, 01:05 AM
Anyone in the world
By Sharon Jacobsen So, the time has come to pop the question, eh? If you're thinking of going down on one knee and asking her to marry you in the traditional way that women love, you'd better have the engagement ring ready. While it's becoming more popular for couples to decide to become engaged in an off-hand manner and then venture down to the jeweller to choose the engagement ring together, many women still feel there's something special about wearing a ring that their beau has chosen especially for them. Making the Right Choice of Engagement Ring Before you can even consider looking at rings, you need to find out a few basic things: What is her ring size? Does she prefer yellow or white gold? Does she prefer simple styles or would she prefer an engagement ring that will be instantly noticed? By studying the kind of jewellery she generally wears, you can find out a lot about her tastes. If she wears simple jewellery, this is probably a sign that a diamond solitaire may be more appropriate than a flashy engagement ring carrying a cluster of gems. Be aware of any jewellery she admires, especially engagement rings. If she appears to be particularly impressed by a certain ring, make a mental note of the cut and shape of the stone and the colour of the gold. The ring you choose should reflect her personalityshe'll be wearing it for a long time, after all. The Cost of An Engagement Ring Once you've decided on a style, it's time to determine how much you can spend on the ring. Traditionally, a man is expected to spend at least the equivalent of two month's salary, although a lesser amount is acceptable these days. There are several reasons why the engagement ring was expected to be so costly. So that the young ladyand, not least, her familywould know that you had made a conscious effort at saving in order to propose to her. By saving for the ring, you show that you're also capable of saving for a future home. Should the couple fall upon hard times, there would always be the ring to 'pawn' in order to get through. As most young people no longer live in their parent's homes but have outgoings of their own, unless you're an especially high earner, nobody will expect you to "prove your worth" by spending two months salary on an engagement ring. What is important is that you spend enough to show her just how much she means to you, based on your own personal budget. Buying the Engagement Ring Once you've decided on a style and the amount you're happy to spend, it's time to head for the shops. But before you go charging into the first jewellery shop you come across, stop for a moment and remember that this is an engagement ring and, as such, probably the most important piece of jewellery you'll ever buy. Before you go shopping, ask around and try to determine which jewellers offer the kind of service you need. If you're buying a diamond set ring, you'll want a guarantee that the stone is conflict free, and you'll want re-sizing included in the price. You'll also want at least a 12-month guarantee against loss of the stone due to faulty craftsmanship or defects in the materials used. Decide on a two or three shops, give them your maximum budget minus ten percent, and ask to see the available collections. Why minus ten percent? In order to tempt you into spending more, a jeweller will almost invariably include a few pieces that are slightly above your maximum budget. This way, even those rings will still be within your real budget. Make sure the metal is properly hallmarked, that diamonds carry a certificate including the carat and grading of the stone, and that the jewellery provides a guarantee that the diamonds are conflict free. Once you've procured your chosen engagement ring, all that remains is for you to find the perfect moment and hope that she'll accept your ring as a perfect symbol of the love you feel for her. Should You Make A Career Decision Based Upon A Career Quiz?
by brunhilde lang - Friday, 2 May 2008, 11:06 AM
Anyone in the world
By Brian Fong Q. I'm about to graduate High School and I don't know what I want to be "when I grow up". Do you think that a career quiz might help me decide? A. Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! But maybe not for the reasons that you think. You see, as the great Quizmaster, I've found one thing to be true: A career quiz, or any quiz for that matter, is always biased towards the thoughts and belief's of the person who wrote it. Usually a career quiz is written for entertainment purposes only. Now, if you are calling it a career quiz, but you really mean some sort of standardized occupational guidance test like professional career counsellors and the military use, then those are typically valid assessments of your career capabilities. However, since you are asking the question here, and I am definitely not a career counsellor, then I'm going to assume that you are talking about your run-of-the-mill career quiz like the type that you find in typical magazines and on a variety of general audience web sites. So, the reason that I said "Yes, yes, a thousand times yes" is because anything that gets someone thinking about career options is a good thing. A well-written career quiz has the effect of causing you to brainstorm over your career options. What you want to be "when you grow up" may be a moving target for you. Most people evolve as they mature and their goals change. What sounds like a good idea now may be far away from what you will eventually become. However, as I said, a career quiz gets you thinking and that's a start! When looking for a career quiz take a good look at the type of questions that are being asked. Remember what I said about the author's bias earlier? You want to find a career quiz that asks "horizontal" questions rather than "vertical" ones. For example, a horizontal question might be: "Do you enjoy working against deadlines?", while I vertical question might be "do you prefer the precision of hand tools versus the speed of power tools?". Horizontal career quiz questions are designed to explore general career likes and dislikes while "vertical" questions tends to try and shoehorn you into a particular career path. Now don't get me wrong, there is a place for a vertical career quiz. For example, if you are thinking about a career in woodworking, and you are trying to decide if you want to be a cabinet maker or a house framer, a vertical career quiz is exactly what you need. The important thing to remember is to never make a career decision based solely upon the results of some career quiz that you happen to come across. If the quiz gets you to thinking that you might enjoy some particular career, then research that option more fully. A career quiz is simply another tool to help you navigate the pathways of life. Seriously Big Carp and Giant Catfish
by brunhilde lang - Sunday, 27 April 2008, 01:04 PM
Anyone in the world
By Tim F. Richardson Due to effects of global warming and the massive application of quality nutritional baits, carp and catfish have been growing much bigger than previously ever imagined. When it comes to carp especially, this has caught out many anglers whose perception of the correct tackle to handle much bigger fish is not accurate at all! The number of big carp hooked in the UK over 40 pounds has really risen noticeably, while in other parts of Europe especially in France, this sized fish is merely regarded as a baby at certain fisheries, where carp can exceed 60 and 70 pounds. Heres my insights into the effects of using fishing rods which have not been equal to the task for big carp up to 50 pounds and well over this mark for example and for catfish to about one hundred pounds. I say these weights because I have been lucky enough to hook and land quite a number of fish of this size and have direct experience trying to play fish on a variety of different rods. For me stopping power is the key with big fish. It maybe you can cast 150 yards onto a spot with accuracy, but if youre rod basically means you have no control over a running fish at all and are only dependant on the using the clutch on your reel for control, then you definitely have changed the odds in favour of the really big fish. This can give you such problems that your fish of a life time will very likely be lost when he turns up one day or night and he will do everything he can to find any weakness in your tackle! Mostly this weakness results in having a massive adrenaline rush, extreme bodily shaking and an extremely sick feeling in your gut as you inspect your broken line. I hope this piece will help prevent this experience for you! Extremely heavy, big sized fish generate awesome and even unbelievable power. Such forward momentum and weight alone are very tough to slow down when your fish of a lifetime is surging towards the closest snag in the water! You need real power in the top third and middle part of your rod at least. Without this you are simply playing fish off the butt end and that is risky on most rods because butt ends do not do much! You dont want to be playing fish just off the reel clutch with no control over the fish. Any mistakes using the reel and you may pull out of the fish, break the line (or rod) or end up giving the fish vital extra line or stretch to force their forward momentum and get into the safety of snags etc. You might argue that you need to play fish differently, be gentler with them and change the rod or line angle for example. Sometimes though you can sense when a fish knows what its primary aim and is going for it no matter what you do to stop it! With the rod and reel combination some fish just cannot be stopped at all. I had this with a carp at Lac du Salagou in France where the rod was a 2 and 3 quarter pound test curve top and middle action rod and the line was 15 pound test. This fish simply ran in a straight line with the rod beyond its test curve until the line broke when it run out at the reel. And this fish was a carp because it was seen on the surface very early in the fight. Another example of where power is needed is at Rainbow Lake in France in 2005. Here not only did industrial thickness sized 2 hooks get opened up and 15 pound rated brand new line get easily snapped, but very highly rated rods used, immediately went straight past their test curves and were absolutely useless and powerless to prevent some extremely heavy carp from running into sunken tree snags. On this water, even where rods were tied to their rests and to the ground and Shimano bait runner reel clutches were screwed up tightly, a couple of runs even at over 200 yards away, were so amazingly powerful, that the rod and clutch still had no initial effect whatsoever in slowing the fish. The rods used were original Rod Hutchinson Dream makers at 13 foot and 3 and a half pound test curve, on 80 pound braid mainline. It must be added that one fish lost in the last trip was certainly the big one which is now the 87 pound record. This fish made its way into a sunken tree and despite having it actually just 1 foot below the surface, it was impossible to land as the line was angled between 2 branches whose side branches made it impossible to net the fish. Very possibly, with more powerful rods, the initial run could well have been slowed and those snags would not have been reached. However, most fish know to run directly for cover (dependant on line angles, rod pressure and so on) and know exactly where safety is too! When those carp are over 60 and 70 pounds and more, the right choice of rod is absolutely essential! A friend of mine who is a much respected rod builder learnt from my lesson and designed his own amazingly powerful reverse taper rods for just this situation. (Fishing near entire sunken trees on a newly discovered Bulgarian big fish water.) His reward was the new lake record at the time, at around 65 pounds, was actually extracted from between whole mature sunken trees in the swim. It needs stating here of course, that there is a line to be drawn between fishing in near snag situations with the safety of the fish in mind and using fish safe tackle, (like lead release clips for example) and that of fishing at all costs which may result in damage, or suffering to the fish. In the Rainbow Lake swim situation I felt I had rods powerful enough for the job because I had been able to control pretty swiftly, a string of carp hooked in the UK of over 40 pounds and a good number of catfish too from 50 to over 100 pounds. The feeling was that if the rods could slow a 70 pound catfish on its first run, then they should do the same for carp of the same size when fishing near sunken trees. Was I was totally mistaken or what!!! (Large water carp tend to move around very much and are in many cases very fit and lean fish compared to smaller water fish. If you have never hooked carp way over 50 pounds then it is rather like a 100 meter champion sprinting away from you with you fishing line attached the initial quickness speed and momentum is not normal!) The rods used specifically for catfish these days, are to me much more like boat rods for sea fishing and really need to be! The test curves on them and their action require such devastating power, often to counteract the steaming run of a catfish over 7 feet long, but also the possible run of river currents too. In my humble experience, playing catfish is never the same as playing carp, or most other species as you are up against; a curling backward swimming, bottom hugging, 7 foot long muscle! Therefore its horses for courses. A When hooked from the bank side a giant catfish equals a very physical tug of war. The word playing probably more applies to your fancy footwork and your feet are usually digging at the ground to stop you being pulled over or pulled in! Its the same with a boat hooked giant catfish. I hooked one in the UK once which took me to every corner of a 6 acre reservoir against a strong wind too and never gave up. This fish has never been netted or banked and its my certain belief that this fish is the biggest in the UK by a very large margin... I landed the 2 of around (or over) 100 pounds from the infamous Oak Lodge and the power of this other fish was in a totally different league... If you are angling for very big fish and you know your tackle may not be quite adequate, change it immediately. Its just not worth deluding yourself. There are many popular rod brands which are just not up to the job of controlling big fish like 100 pound catfish or crazy fighting 70 pound plus carp. They were never designed for that. In the States for example, there must be countless waters which could hold new records with extremely big unknown carp and catfish cruising around in them, but because of various tackle issues and lack of angler experience in playing extremely big fish, very, very frequently these occasions when such fish get hooked, theyre lost. Such fish can take on mythical status! I would look at the tool for the job extremely seriously and if you feel there is no suitable rod available for the situation and size and raw power of fish expected to be encountered then get them custom built. I hooked a fish at Dream Lakes years ago, at a time when a legendary estimated 70 pound carp called the Dolphin existed. I actually saw it head and shoulder in my swim and very close in too. I nearly fell over backwards as my jaw hit the deck at the size of it! (It was just too big to be real.) I had photographed carp to over 55 pounds previously and had thought that looked big. I noticed it left no ripples at all as it sank. This was one very clever fish. Just 10 minutes later as I still was wondering if it was a dream, (and still cranking my eyes back in having stuck out on stalks,) I got a take the violence and speed of which Id never experienced until one particularly incredibly powerful one at Rainbow Lake. The fish just ran so fast and hard it charged head-first through every very heavy weed bed in front of me, for a distance of about 75 yards before changing direction, and leaving the dropped hook in the weed. The following day, I easily landed the Dream Lake 1 catfish record of a mere 27 pounds. Again, the rod was great for a fish of 20 to 30 odd pounds, but utterly useless when it really mattered with a very seriously big carp! Various highly skilled individuals and rod companies will do this for you. For example Nick Buss is a leading light in this respect in the UK and has a range of custom built rods which are in the top rank in world performance carp rods. Top class rods have a vastly superior action and give you incredible control of fish, sensitivity and lightness and greater casting accuracy, and ability to cast great distance while play fish superbly at close range, among many other benefits. I just wish Id got some before I went to Rainbow Lake, but fishing is a funny game... The author has many more fishing and bait edges up his sleeve. Lip Gloss

By NamSing Then Lip gloss is a cosmetic product which is generally oily and reflecting light, primarily by teenage girls and women to give lips shine and subtle color, but often not lasting very long Lip gloss comes as a viscous liquid or a soft solid. It can be translucent or can come in various shades of opacity, including frosted, glittery and metallic looks. A clear lip gloss can be smeared over regular lipstick for extra shine. Lip gloss can be applied different ways. The most popular type is a tube, which typically has a rounded or sloped application surface meant to fit the contour of the lips. It can also be squeezed on your finger and applied evenly. Some liquid glosses come in cylindrical containers, with a cosmetic stick used to apply the gloss. Solid lip glosses come in pots and panels which are applied with fingers or a lipstick brush. There are also tubes which are used like lipstick. Though lip gloss is most commonly used as a cosmetic, it is also used as a moisturizer. There are many types and brands of lip gloss available but the most favorite being Lip Smackers by Bonne Bell. These lip glosses come in many flavors such as strawberry, watermelon, and even candy flavors like Skittles, Starburst and M&Ms. In fact, lip gloss can be easily made at home using commonly available ingredients like Paraffin wax, Coconut oil, Petroleum jelly, Ziploc bag, Candy melts (to color the gloss and make it taste sweet), Oil-based candy flavoring depending on the type of flavor you like, Grater, Wax paper, small container like a recycled old makeup containers or film containers. Grate some paraffin wax onto wax paper. Then measure 1/4 teaspoon of this grated wax into the plastic bag. Add 1 teaspoon coconut oil, 1 teaspoon petroleum jelly, 1 candy melt and 1/8 teaspoon oil-based candy flavoring. Seal the bag and carefully put it in a bowl of hot tap water to melt ingredients for about 3-5 minutes. Only tap water is to be used and never use a microwave or stove to heat the water. Once all the ingredients are melted well, remove the bag from the water. Squish ingredients around in bag to mix thoroughly and cut off a tiny corner of the bag and squeeze gloss into the clean container. Let it set for an hour, or store it in the refrigerator for 15 minutes. Use a cotton swab instead of your finger to apply gloss. Your lip-gloss should last a long time. If it changes color, odor, or texture discard it. NamSing Then is a regular article contributor on many topics. Money Matters-For Those Major Life Purchases-Get Your Financing Together First!
by brunhilde lang - Sunday, 20 April 2008, 05:32 PM
Anyone in the world
By Jim Hart Moneybased on my observations over the years I have learned that it pays dividends when considering large purchases like cars, homes, education and the like, to get your facts and financing together first. Nothing can be worse than purchasing large ticket items while you are carried away on an overwhelming whirlwind of emotion, which often accompanies these big-ticket purchases. The best way to minimize purchasing mistakes and errors in judgement is to get your financing together first. Lets take a quick look at a few of these purchases and how they can be best approached. Buying a home-if you are planning on buying or refinancing a home take the time to learn about the details about various loan programs on the market by talking to several lenders including both banks and mortgage brokers. There are a wide variety of conventional and governmental home loan programs (including FHA and VA loans) that may be more tailored to your short, medium and long range needs. One of the best things you can do is ask a bank for a free HUD booklet, which explains the fundamentals of home loans and how they impact you. Learn the financial speak and dont sign ANYTHING unless you (really) know what you are doing. Always be sure to talk to at least three loan officers and take notes, read loan literature, get pre-qualified for financing and understand exactly what you are doing BEFORE you look at homes. Doing so makes you a smarter buyer and less likely to make mistakes. Buying a car-it doesnt make any sense to me to buy a new car and lose thousands of dollars within minutes by driving it off the car lot. It makes more financial sense to buy a nice pre-owned car at a far less price of course, you want to have it professionally inspected by a third party (licensed mechanic) before you buy it. And the key is the time of year you buy the car. In my opinion the best time of the year to buy a car is January or February of each New Year. Heres why: A used car may be selling for $10,0000.00 on December 31 of a given year but on January 1 (the next day/the new year) it will not be worth as much as the day before because of the calendar change (.) Used cars tend to sell slower during this period of the year and your negotiating strength is highest. I like to think of this strategy as being prudent not cheap. Buying education-colleges are in the business of selling education. They have classes to fill and representatives to help steer students into those classes. Many people who go to school seem to follow the follower by chasing trends. Remember the rush to get a computer programming degree during the 80s? Everybody ran off to be a programmer only to find out (after they graduated) that much of the employment demand had been filled by the glut of computer graduates. Trends are like that by the time you hear about a hot job market and run off to get educated for it, the market is filled. So heres the key to selecting an education: What do you love to do? What would you do for free everyday? Thats probably a good starting point for selecting an education. America is a giant monopoly board and areas like business; law and medicine are good choices for education too. No matter what education you pursue you should (once again) get your financing together first. Request information from the schools of interest to you. Meet with their financial aid departments; find out about student loans and state and federal grants. Many communities have work incentive programs that offer education and training for unemployed or displaced workers, call your local Bureau of Employment and ask if they have sources for assistance. If you have a disability, you may want to contact your local Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (BVR) they have many programs that may be able to assist you or fund your education. Whether you are a parent of a child who is planning on college or an adult planning on going to school, dig in and research all your financial options (Dont forget the Internet!) Smokey Eyes Like Hilary Duff

By Katrina VanDoran Hilary Duff does do Smokey eyes well! She is also combining Smokey with a slight cat eye. She takes the darker shade and extends it past her outer eye in an upward "cat" eye motion. It's not as severe as normal "cat" eyes because she softens the look with a medium shade along the middle and a light shade along the upper eyelid just below the eyebrow. She also has a matching shade of eyeliner along the upper eye and also along the lower eye. She blends this color by using her medium eye shadow over her lower eyeliner. The only way she can do this is to use the proper brushes for application. You won't get a good Smokey or even a good "cat" eye with the applicator that comes in your eye shadow compact. You will need to invest in two brushes for this look. You will need: Chisel Angle Fluff Brush - For all over color and under eye brow Chisel Double Shader Brush - For contouring and blending - A trio eye shadow or three shades of color: light, medium, dark preferably in a Smokey hue like: Bren Cosmetics Eye Shadow Trio Eclipse Grapevine Amor Bren Cosmetics Eye Liner color Charcoal Charcoal Prune Bren Cosmetics Mascara color Black Black Black Eye lash curler AND AN INDEX CARD! I will walk you through Amor. 1) Using your Angle Fluff Brush apply the cream color all over your eyelid 2) Apply the Prune eye liner along the upper eye closest to your eye lash in about 1/16th inch line, start at the inner eye and go all the way across your eye to outer most portion of your eye angling up and out at the end. 3) Use the Index card and place it at a 45-degree angle against the outer portion of your eye. 4) Using the double shader brush, apply the burnt red color over the Prune eye shadow and lower lid. 5) Keep the index card in place and using the double shader, apply the dark brown color in a diagonal from the center eye to the outer eye stopping just above the middle crease of your eye. 6) Remove index card. 7) Using your Angle Fluff Brush (it should still have a bit of the cream shadow in the brush) in a one directional brush stroke going to the outer portion of your eye, brush once or twice outward to blend the colors and to soften the line left by the index card. Clean brush and dip in cream color for the opposite eye. 8) Curl your eye lashes using a curler and 30 seconds of pressure on your upper eye lashes 9) Apply the black mascara in two layers. And most of all practice, practice, practice as this will take a few times to get the look just right. Gardening Vertically: Fad, Emerging Frontier or Long-Overlooked Art Form

By Steve Townsend Sure, it makes sense that theres a buzz about vertical gardeningthere are lots more of us to feed these days with much less productive land. Lets make the best use of our diminishing resources, many are saying. And likely there are also those who dismiss vertical gardening as a fad. Mostly, though, I hear talk about increased yields. However, I suspect there are vertical gardeners like myself who have been surprised by another aspect we hadnt expected. Necessity is the mother of invention, is a clich often quoted, and human food requirements necessitate sponging-up sunlight at smaller and smaller focal points. My wife, Vicki, and I have a small yard, and somewhat out of necessity we began years ago building what began as rather makeshift trellises. Somewhere along our way, it had dawned on us that vining plants, such as cucurbits, those that produce melons, squash, cucumbers and pumpkins, are much like grape vines, their vines produce tendrils that secure to structures so they can climb as they grow. Commercial farmers still grow cucurbits on the ground, but home gardeners realized long ago that these vining plants are more adapted to growing upward. Of course, home gardeners support cucurbit vines on trellises of all sorts and have devised many ingenious, albeit awkward, means of providing support to heavy melons, pumpkins or squash while they are yet ripening and suspended. We began to desire a more scientific and artistic approach to vertical gardening and to building a vertical garden structure. We searched in vain for a guidebook to how to build one that is both aesthetic and engineered to be vine-friendly, and finally resigned to sketching our own design and years ago we built our first vertical garden structure. As the next season progressed, we were amazed to see squash and melon vines rise to heights over our heads. Each year since, we have been delighted by astounding yields and our harvests of both heirlooms and hybrids (see photos at our website). We have harvested mouth-watering melons whose flavors are unmatched by the store-boughts, and we store enough squash each year that it is mid-April before we cook and savor the last of our trophies. As pleasurable as it is to bite into these orbs of sweetness and palate sensation, though, there is another thrill exclusive to vertical gardening that may eclipse these joys. Vines grown vertically are artful all by themselves as they twist about and their tendrils reach and spiral. Weve observed, though, that with a little pruning and directional coaxing using garden ties, they can be guided to achieve magnificent form and function. Each day of the growing season we can step over to our vertical garden to find wondrous surprises. The magnificence of vines grown vertically tugs gently at our subtler nature until we begin to awaken to a certain glimpse of the sublime. The joys experienced when tending vines may be akin to what one feels when listening to corn grow during the hush of dawn. I ve fallen into awe sometimes while cultivating and coaxing vines to grow left or right or up or down to fill our garden structure. I am eager already for next season, when I will experiment again with varieties strange to me and surely be amazed anew. 2005 Steven J. Townsend. All Rights Reserved.
